“This guide is specific to literary magazines. The process for pitching articles, interviews, reviews or features to commercial magazines is completely different. The below applies primarily to publishing short stories and poems in litmags and anthologies….”
I ran a literary magazine for nearly twenty years, and I’ve also published a lot of work in other magazines. This is a piece I wrote about the process of submitting fiction or poetry for publication. It’s pretty definitive. Maybe the most definitive that can be found online.
The piece has been published by Aerogramme Writers’ Studio, who have a whole bunch of excellent resources. There’s also a slightly more up-to-date version on the Neon Books blog.
