Around Christmas every year Maisie would get a photographer to come around, and a couple of the old ladies from church and the one sister she still has would come around too and she would cook dinner and then afterwards we would all spend ages being shuffled around and told to smile and Maisie would sometimes make me wear a hat, but I'd take it off if I could.
One year she used the photograph to make a Christmas card. She had a big box of them made with MERRY CHRISTMAS AND GOOD TIDINGS written on the front. Half of them are still in the box at the back of the cupboard under the stairs. Another year she had a big copy made and she hung it up beside the stairs so that every time anyone went upstairs or downstairs they would have to see it, and have to look at themselves all dressed up and fake smiling.
