When Mum's away she goes to London because she knows people there. She sleeps on their sofas and when she has to get around she sneaks onto buses and trains. Sometimes she goes on holiday and she does what we did on the way here and makes people give her rides. She goes to different cities and different towns and sometimes to the countryside and she never has any money and she's always fine. She can make people give her things and make people let her stay.
She tells me she had a house for a while. A big old house on the edge of London, where about twenty different people lived. She loved it there. She was fixing it up, painting the walls and making decorations and things like that. But one day she went to a friend's house and when she came back a few days later everyone was gone and the place was empty and boarded up with all her stuff and her paint and her decorations and things inside.
One time she went to a little town in the middle of nowhere. She never even knew the name of it. She stayed for a week. She stayed in a little church up on a hill. One morning she came out and there was a wolf just standing right there about ten steps away from her. She could see the drops of wet on the end of each hair of fur in its coat. She could see the middle of its eyes shrinking as it watched her. She stared at it and it stared at her for ages and ages, and then it turned and ran away.
