An article published in Hidden Compass about the long and inglorious history of Spreepark – a now-abandoned theme park on the edge of Berlin that was once the most-beloved fairground in the communist state of East Germany.
Spreepark is one of my favourite abandoned theme parks. As well as an absolutely insane history, it’s an achingly beautiful site. The gigantic ferris wheel remains in situ to this day, screaming gently as it turns in the wind. Highly recommended. Five stars.
Hidden Compass publishes nuanced, narrative-driven travel writing; incredible stories with a strong sense of place. And beautiful photographs. And they run workshops too. Basically, they’re lovely.
