“The Meta Street Typist won’t leave me alone. He follows me around wherever I go. Leers at me. Watches. Wherever I set up my pitch, he sets up nearby. Waits. Stares me down. Anything I do is followed by a clattering rush of keystrokes . I’ve seen the things he writes. Strange lists: ‘Street Typist writes a story. Street Typist stares into the air. Street Typist eats lunch and watches a fire show. Street Typist looks unhappy about being watched.'”
Street Typist appears at festivals, art events or on particularly sunny days with a perennially-broken typewriter and a variety of handmade props and signs. Using prompts provided by whoever’s nearby at the time, he creates unique written objects: stories, poems, fortunes, jokes and – sometimes – complete nonsense. You can read some of the finished compositions on Instagram.
Street Typist has appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival each year since 2015, as well as at an Esoterica Arts event, and live on air on Radio Summerhall and Future Radio Norwich. Contact me if you’re arranging an event where you think he might be a good fit.
