“The way my mother died had something to do with a cult. Dad won’t talk about it. Bad memories, he says, and his face goes all blank. I’ve looked it up, of course: twenty-seven women in a church hall. Phenobarbital. Paper bags. And, back in that sepia past, my father held in police custody.”
My very short story “Inheritance” appeared online in Burst magazine, which was one of the very earliest publications designed to be read on a mobile device. Sadly Burst is no longer in existence, but you can read an intact version of “Inheritance” online in this internet archive. It is a story about a girl whose mother died in unusual circumstances.
